Oooooh boy. I am EXCITED to share this one!! Allie and Dalton are close to my heart because Allie is my husband’s faaaavorite student from his time as a flight instructor. When we first moved to Atlanta a few years ago Allie met up with us and we got to hear all about her thoughts on the area as well as hear about this boy, DALTON!! I couldn’t possibly tell their super sweet love story in the way they do so I’m going to let her tell you in her own words but OMG get the tissues ready because this is a GOOD ONE!!!!
How did you meet?
We grew up in church together, and on the first day of sixth grade, I thought I was losing it because my knees almost buckled when Dalton smiled at me during the tour of our new school. We casually knew each other from Sunday School, but then had math together all three years of middle school where we became really good friends. On the last day of sixth grade, one of my guy friends told Dalton that I liked him (right in front of me, the horror!), and Dalton didn’t think twice about liking me back and never stopped. He vowed to wait until high school to ask me out on a date to the homecoming dance, but I had made up my mind that I wanted to be just friends and stop liking him (spoiler: it didn’t work). He asked me out again in December since I told him I didn’t like to dance as my cover for turning him down at homecoming, and I rejected him again. The next three years of high school were full on friend zone, with us talking for hours on the phone each week and me trying to set him up with a couple of different girls. I tried really hard to stop liking him, but my high school journals reveal otherwise! Once we went away to college (7 hours and 400 miles apart), I quickly realized that I did not want to be with anyone else, and we met in a park to talk over Christmas break. We decided to try dating, and four years later, we got engaged.
How did he propose?
Since Virginia has such a special place in my heart, Dalton surprised me after our friends’ wedding in North Carolina last July by proposing at McAfee Knob. I am very hard to surprise, but I had no idea that he was about to propose until the morning of while we were eating breakfast. I was so confused because I had been given the next day off of work, so he revealed that he had called my boss to give me the day off. We weren’t going home after the wedding, but rather farther north, so I knew then that it was probably going to happen. I even saw the ring box in his pocket during the drive, and I was SO nervous the whole time that we barely talked. We arrived at McAfee Knob in VA a couple of hours later where I had to endure a long 4 mile hike, still so nervous. I was trying to be good and not ruin the surprise, but I was freaking out and started asking questions once we got closer to the top. He had my friend Alexis meet us to take pictures, but I was walking so fast up the mountain, that we ended up beating her there. It gave me time to fix my hair at least, and about 10 minutes later, he proposed on the ledge of the Knob. We then ate dinner in Roanoke and got Mister Goodies in Lynchburg. He arranged for me to spend the night with one of my best friends from college, and then we were greeted by our immediate family for a surprise party when we got back to Georgia the next day.
